So I found out where all the cool kids hang out – Main Street and Broadway. Hot damn I’ve never seen so many Macs and blisteringly tight pants! And with a name like Mount Pleasant, surely this place is a – uh – pleasant place to spend a morning fika!
This little neighbourhood is quite beautiful though and it’s home to one of the best damn breakfast places in the whole Lower Mainland – Slickity Jim’s. What makes it damn cool is sort of strange actually – because it certainly isn’t the overpriced bland menu or the snarky waitresses.
What makes this place solid is the antique feel once you get inside. It’s interesting as hell to gander away at the ‘old stuff’ plastered all over the walls. It’s definitely worth a trip if you want a decent breakfast!
Aside from that, this historical block also has a cool clock (not quite as touristy as the Steam Clock in Gastown, but swell nonetheless), a café that feels like you need an invitation to enter or at the very least a Macbook and / or a copy of Vice Magazine (Gene’s Café) and of course, there’s a wee bit of street art kicking around.
Oh yeah! This block is also home to a pretty skookum looking Legion. For all you non-Canadians looking to gain citizenship to our lovely country, I think that before you get a passport you have to get a membership to the Legion. The benefits of a Legion membership are fairly cheap pints, solid and level pool tables, a place where you know you will have to take your hat off, kick-ass bingo games and an overall patriotic feeling knowing you’re supporting an organization that literally went to war for our freedom. Not a bad thing!
So that’s my little tour of this one block on Main Street. I meandered here this morning for a brew and a change of scenery, but it looks like a place worth wandering one day with the camera as there certainly is a lot of cool things to check out!
