Vancouver, Land of 18% Gratuities

For our convenience, restaurants apply an automatic 18% gratuity onto your bills throughout the duration of the Olympics. Kind of them eh?

The result is godawful service from waiters and waitresses who simply don’t give a shit because they know they’re getting their cushy 18% no matter what.

C’est la vie. The flip side is servers aren’t getting 0% from cheap non-tippers, so I guess this is a double-edged sword. It just sucks for locals who do tip on a regular basis.

This is an easy one. Pay in cash and subtract that 18% if they don’t deserve the tip. Tips are supposed to be to reward good service. This practice is not only offensive, it’s probably borderline illegal.

It’s definitely offensive. Actually, it’s total bullshit. I served for 7 years and I would be furious if the places I worked at implemented this. So it’s not the servers fault but where I get really annoyed is when the servers give you garbage service just because they know they can. But you’re right Nick, it very well could be illegal!!!!

Hence I will gladly pay HST…and they protest it, gee lets sit down and do the math…Health Care, EI benefits, public education or paying for a really nice server who couldnt care less about me at the end of the day…
